Zygomatic Implants: An Alternative for Advanced Bone Loss

For patients with significant bone loss in the upper jaw, traditional dental implants may not be a viable option without extensive bone grafting. At Bond St, we utilise Zygomatic implants as a clinically indicated alternative for full-arch rehabilitation in the upper jaw.

What are Zygomatic Implants?

Zygomatic implants are longer than conventional dental implants. Rather than being placed in the maxillary (jaw) bone, they are anchored into the zygomatic bone (cheekbone), which provides a dense and stable foundation for a fixed bridge.

The Procedure: Single and Quad Zygoma

Depending on the volume of bone available in the anterior (front) region of the jaw, your treatment plan may include:

  • Single Zygoma: One or two Zygomatic implants used in conjunction with conventional implants.

  • Quad Zygoma: Four Zygomatic implants are utilised when there is insufficient bone across the entire upper arch.

These procedures are complex and are performed under General Anaesthesia at Bond St. To ensure the highest standard of care, these surgeries are performed by a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in our dedicated surgical suite.

Restorative Timeline

A key feature of the Zygomatic protocol is the ability to provide a fixed bridge shortly after surgery. Typically, a provisional set of teeth is connected to the implants within 1 to 3 days of the procedure. This allows for the restoration of dental function while the implants undergo the necessary healing process (osseointegration).

Clinical Considerations

Zygomatic implants provide a fixed, non-removable solution for patients who have previously struggled with the instability of removable dentures. While this procedure avoids the need for bone grafting, it is a significant surgical undertaking.

  • Maintenance: These restorations require meticulous oral hygiene and regular professional reviews to ensure the health of the surrounding tissues.

  • Longevity: The success of the implants is dependent on clinical factors, including the patient’s overall health and adherence to maintenance protocols.

Important Information: All dental procedures carry risks. A comprehensive clinical examination and 3D imaging are required to determine suitability for Zygomatic implants. Individual results vary. Zygomatic implant surgery is an invasive procedure; inherent risks include infection, nerve sensitivity, and sinus complications. Any surgical or invasive procedure, especially those performed under General Anaesthesia, carries additional risks; before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
