Professional Teeth Whitening: Understanding the Zoom! System

A bright, healthy-looking smile is a common goal for many of our patients. At Bond St, we utilise the Philips Zoom! WhiteSpeed system, a clinically evaluated in-chair whitening treatment designed to address tooth discolouration and staining.

How Does Zoom! Whitening Work?

The Zoom! procedure is a light-activated whitening process. During the treatment, a pH-balanced hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth. When activated by the Zoom! LED light, this gel works to break down the molecular bonds of common stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco.

The process typically involves:

  • Preparation: Your gums and soft tissues are protected with a clinical barrier.

  • Application: The whitening gel is applied in three to four 15-minute sessions.

  • Activation: The LED accelerator light is used to facilitate the whitening process.

Clinical Considerations and Suitability

It is important to understand that teeth whitening is a clinical procedure and is not suitable for everyone. A consultation with a dentist or dental hygienist is mandatory to assess your oral health before proceeding.

Whitening may not be effective on:

  • Existing Restorations: Crowns, veneers, and fillings do not change colour with whitening treatments.

  • Internal Staining: Discolouration caused by certain medications or trauma may require alternative restorative treatments.

  • Sensitivity: Patients with thin enamel or pre-existing sensitivity may require a modified approach or desensitising treatments.

Maintaining Your Results

While in-chair whitening can achieve significant results in a single visit, the longevity of the treatment depends on individual lifestyle factors and oral hygiene. We provide patients with tailored aftercare advice and offer take-home maintenance kits to help manage their results over time.

Important Information: All dental procedures carry risks. A consultation and clinical examination are required to determine suitability for teeth whitening. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Side effects may include temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. Teeth whitening is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
